Persian Karadagh Varni Kilim — Golden Ivory & Geometric Border | 3'11" × 6'9"
Sometimes the most striking thing in a rug is the space left empty. Here the centre is a calm, open field of golden ivory with no pattern at all, and all the design energy goes into a wide frame around it.
That border is built from stepped cross-shaped medallions in red, brown and ivory, each holding a small red diamond. Between them run deep blue anchor-like forms, linked by little red diamonds into a continuous chain. Thin red stripes and a dark green outer edge finish it neatly.
This is Varni, a flatweave from Iranian Azerbaijan in which the pattern is wrapped into the weave rather than knotted as pile. The surface is flat and finely textured, and on the back you will see short loose yarn ends where colours change, a normal part of the technique. Because the centre is so quiet, it is an easy rug to live with. It works well under a coffee table or in a bedroom where you want warmth and pattern without a busy floor.
